timthelder 225 Report post Posted December 21, 2021 Well, how bout that. In my email yesterday, I had one from someone claiming to be a representative from Discover Magazine. They sent a couple of tax forms (a W-8 and W-9) wanting me to fill them out with my personal info so they could pay me for the use of my photo in The January 2022 issue of Astronomy Magazine. I was like "yeah, right." "I already have my January issue a little late aren't we." (Nobody's getting my personal info. Scammer.) So, I replied back to just donate my $25 gratuity to a non-profit organization of their choice. I didn't think any more of it. Today, I happen to take a look at my January issue, (in which I have had for a couple of weeks.) Sure enough, object #9, The Blinking Planetary, photo credit, Me! I submitted that image back in 2013! Whoops, I'm glad I was nice to the scammer, LOL. Cheers, Tim.
wingeing Pom 836 Report post Posted December 28, 2021 I did something similar a few years back. I won't go into the background - but I got a call - supposedly from Apple marketing, asking if they could have a few of my high-res images to look at as possibly the desktop on their latest OS. I said something along the lines of do you think I'm soft in the head, no, I don't send out high-res images to anyone. They gave me a phone number to check they were kosher and I said I'm not phoning up the States from the UK just to talk to a scammer. They carried on a bit longer before giving up. I saw not long afterwards that they were kosher and they used one of Gendler's instead. Story of my life. Greg
wingeing Pom 836 Report post Posted December 28, 2021 And by the way, as you probably know, it was illegal not to get your agreement and sort out payment before your image was used. That is breach of Copyright and you can sue. A good astrophotographer friend actually makes a great deal more money by suing Copyright infringers than he does on getting paid for legitimate use of his images.
