Satellite and Radar Weather Images

Recommended Posts

I keep a keen eye on the weather down under. I don't mind chasing the odd storm and watching cloud roll in, but these last few weeks have been unprecedented. Check this picture out from earlier today. 90% of Australia's coastlines are experiencing serious thunderstorms and there is a cyclone up north of Western Australia in Port Hedland.

First screenshot is radar, not satellite, so it shows rain, not cloud.

Each cross depicts a lightning strike.

Lightning strikes are displayed as crosses (ground events) or squares (cloud events) and fade from white (current) to red (30 minutes ago) to blue (60 minutes ago). Positive strikes appear as diagonal crosses.

Second screenshot below showing satellite image of cloud about 6 hours later than my radar screenshot above. Also Cyclone shown hitting Port Hedland literally as this is being typed.

The weather gods must be angry. :oI promise never to spend so much on astronomy equipment again.

At least this bad weather is during a full moon and not during dark skies.
