G'day Adrian, I personally have not used one of these cameras, but I have seen many astrophotographers that do.

This page might come in handy.

I don't really know much about the camera, but judging from the images taken with it, it's pretty good. Apparently this camera doesn't use an IR filter, so it's well suited for red nebulae etc.

Is this what you were using for your afocal shots?

Thanks for that will look at the website.
I was using a Fujifilm Finepix S5600 for the previous afocal shots I only took delivery of the Coolpix yesterday.

Hi Adrian,

I use a coolpix 4500 it is a similar camera to yours. It's good for photos of the Moon and brighter planets and I also like to use it for widefield photos of satellites and starfields. With a Tele Vue 28mm adaptor I can couple it to an eyepiece for afocal photography. The electronic release was to expensive so I made a mechanical one with some aluminium bar and a cheap mechanical cable from a camera shop, this helps with timed shots. Following are a few photos that I have taken with my coolpix.

Nice pix I would be very happy if I could take pictures like that. I will have a ring around today to see if I can find an adaptor. Now all I gotta do is wait for the rain and fog to disappear!!

In my early days of imaging i had a 990 camera. Had no idea what i was doing but took the camera out one night put it on a tripod and fired away. I was stoke at what i had captured. All these little hot pixels and a lot of noise i thought they where stars till i read about astrophotography. Still this is what got me started in imaging.

I'll have to put my order in for Xmas 2011 for a new camera. 2008,2009 and 2010 are already booked with a 12" tracking scope (3 years in one) ;)
