Anyone here used the Celestron Sky Scout yet?
Is it aimed more toward beginners?

I believe there was a review of it in the S&T magazine late last year.

saw some reviews on the net.Seems that it chews through batteries, resets itself frequently, requiring reinitializing. There seemed to be several tales of defective devices having to be sent back, with poor backup from celestron. When they work, apparently it does what it is supposed to do and is a lot of fun, especially for beginners. Sounds like celestron have cut corners on QC , but it should be a goer when they iron out the problems.

There is also a definite issue as far as users in the southern hemi (us) are concerned. I think you'll find we come up wanting as far as listed objects are concerned... so wait awhile - then buy.
I reckon, when the bugs are ironed out, this will be the best thing to hit amateur astronomy since Radar learned to cook!

very funny.
I would like to see one of these sky scouts in action. Like with all astro equipment there are bugs, but I think this invention would be good for beginners.
I also like the fact that it is a totally original idea.

i originally thought one could use it as a finder on a Dob, -thinking cheap digital setting circle-but no, it has only a very limited number of DSOs and apparently its not accurate enough for that purpose (sigh)

That is actually quite a good idea. You could place it on any scope or attach it to binoculars. This would help noobs bigtime.

Good idea if you have the spare cash. But there is a lot to be said for some binos and a good map. :hmm:

Yeah, I would not recommend using a goto system to start off. I learnt the old fashioned way, planisphere and star map. It made me learn the sky well.
