How good are DSLR's? Can they have better resolution than film? I read about a lot of people using them for photography these days. I'm yet to see a really stunning image from one though.

I read on another site that they are pretty good. Though I am yet to see them match professional ccd's or film.

Please check out this site, which will give you some idea of what is possible with a DSLR and a simple setup. http://www.skylab.com.au/pmsa/

Another friend's samples attached, which will blow you away. These are cooled CCD Starlight express images (attached) taken with the Tak 180ED f/2.8 astrograph. Some DSLR images taken through this scope will be getting close. Each new model DSLR that comes out just gets better and cheaper, like the new Canon 400 etc. Hope this helps a bit. I have recently got the Tak 180 and a modified Nikon D50 (no filter) and a Canon 350D to play with when we get some clear skies. I will not be using film anymore. A BIG plus with a DSLR is that you can just keep taking short images and co-adding over many nights, to a final image, a wonderful and simple technique.

Yeah, those shots are pretty amazing. I've heard good things about DSLR's lately. I haven't used one yet though.

One major advantage with a DSLR is the speed that one can get an image on to the Internet. I took these Moon shots a few minutes ago with a Canon 350D, tripod mounted, using a 300mm zoom lens.

Over the past three days I have been taking some interval (time lapse) shots of some magnificent cactus flowers opening, shots taken every 10 minutes.

The quality is superb and better than I would get with film, and I have shot a lot of film over the years. The tonal and dynamic range is excellent. I am creating a Picasa website picture gallery where I will post these, which may be of interest to those who want to see how well a DSLR performs. I feel it is better to compare objects that we are all familiar with. Astro pics are not a fair test.

a sample of some moon shots with a 350D, please keep in mind these are out of the camera with no post processing of any kind taken with a 12" Meade LX200. Just to give you some idea of the cameras lunar capability.

No post processing?

That is impressive!

Love the detail in some those shots. Those DSLR's can certainly compete well with film and ccd.
