This is a general information thread on the Planet Neptune.

Please feel free to add some facts or questions about this Planet.

Neptune is the smallest of the four Gas Giant planets with a diameter of 49,528 km.

Neptune orbits at an average distance of 4,490 Million Kilometers from the Sun.

Neptune has a ring system as do all the four Gas Giant planets.

There are a lot more facts about Neptune...please add a few.

Neptune is a Blue Planet. It may have a small core of molten rock at it's centre, but the bulk of the planet, as befits it's name, consists of water. The lower egion of this vast warm ocean are mixed with rocky materials at the core to form a dense mud, while the top of the ocean gradually peters out into an atmospere made largely of hydrogen and Helium gas. A small amount of methane in Neptune's air gives the planet it's homely colour, for methane absorbs red light and reflects blue light back into space.

The centre of Neptune is extrenely HOT! It's center temperture of 7,000 degrees Celcius is higher than that at the surface of the Sun.

Neptune is actually warmer than Uranus...a balmy -214 degrees C. LOL

How do scientists figure out the core temperature of Neptune? Or any planet for that matter. :hmm:
