View Full Version : Which Focal Reducer?

I am thinking of getting either the f/6.3 focal reducer/field flattener from Meade for my Celestron Nexstar 11 GPS and piggybacking a ED80 for a guide-scope with illuminated reticule eyepiece. It is on the Bintel website. For a little bit more there is a f/3.3 CCD focal reducer.

I am using an unmodified Canon EOS 400D

Which is the better item, and why?

Baz.

Baz,
My understanding is that the 3.3 is only for photgraphic use not visual.
Whereas the 6.3 is ok for either. Photographically I would think the 3.3 would be an advantage to you with the 11" (I'm only using a C8) as you'd get a larger FOV.

Another point though, when I was buying my 6.3 I was going to get the Meade item from Bintel and just as I was going to handover my money the nice folks at Bintel too the time to ask if I was using it visually, which I said I was. They then informed me that Meade had changed their manufacturing of the 6.3 and now visual use was 'disappointing'. So I contacted Celestron and checked if their's was still ok for visual and photgraphic which it was, so I managed to chase one down on Ebay. I've been very happy with it.
