View Full Version : Cygnus Wide

Here are two exposures of Cygnus. One lens was 28mm and the other was 49mm (I think).
For those that don't know, the 28mm shows a narrower field of view.
As you can see, Cygnus was very low on the horizon. My autoguider was handing out crazy results due to scintillation, so I ended up canning this exposure after 20 minutes because I thought I was getting tracking errors. Though I probably should have let nature take it's course and gone the full hour.
There is some vignetting is both images.
Both taken on Kodak Elite Chrome 200.
The veil nebula is visible toward the upper right hand corner. The North American Nebula is the big bright nebula at the bottom centre.

Hi Ray,
Great images.
When did you have the chance to take these?
Cheers Colin

Hey Ray
Those images look brilliant. :thumbsupmate:
What do you mean by vignetting ? Is that like twisting ? And what causes this ? :duh:
Cheers Jason :pipethinker:

Cheers mate.
I took these the night I shot The Rho Ophiuchus Complex. I just never got around to scanning them until this week.
Hey Ray

Vignetting is where the corners are darker than the centre. This is common in optical equipment and can be easily overcome by stopping down the aperture a stop or two (making it smaller).
There is some twisting in this image though. The twisting is actually bad autoguiding. I think that came from guiding on stars so low on the horizon. The scintillation was terrible.

Port Hedland would be awesome Stu.
M51, M81 and 82 would be nicely visible and shootable from that elevation. Are you taking your scope?

Not sure yet, If I go I'm not sure whether its a flight or via road subject to cost of getting work gear up there. Hope to drive, furthest north I've been by road in WA is Geraldton, be nice to see some true outback countryside :eartoear: and maybe catch some dark skies along the way.

Was thinking about this image of Cygnus the other night. The Milky Way is still quite strong throughout Cygnus, so I think I'm going to do a superwide image of the milky way starting at Cygnus and continuing right through to Carina and beyond. It'll be numerous exposures, so I'll have to stitch the images together, but I think it would be worthwhile.

When are you moving to digital mate? Have you decided between DSLR or CCD yet?
:hmm:

As soon as I have the cash mate, I'm getting a monochrome ccd camera and if I can afford it, a dslr.
Hopefully before the end of next month. It's all bills at the moment.
Stephen (http://www.myastrospace.com/forums/member.php?u=304)has leant me his colour Meade DSI as of Friday. I haven't had a chance to use it yet. So hopefully the first clear night I get, I will be able to get my feet wet with some digital imaging.
I had a good gander at Steve's observatory (pretty impressive) and got to meet his beer droid (very polite little robot).
Steve's offline at the moment with ISP issues.

Not yet mate. Only had one decent clear night since I've had it and I had to work.
Hopefully tonight will be clear.

You've also got the whole of the Gamma Cygni nebulosity that surrounds Sadr there in the middle - got a lot of great stuff here Ray at a reasonable image scale! Good shot!!

Thanks Greg,
Even when I go DSLR or CCD, I'll probably still always use my film cameras for widefield work. I love the film platform, even more for widefield.
