This is a general information thread on the Planet Saturn.

Please feel free to add some facts or questions about this Planet.

Saturn is the second largest planet with a diameter of 120,536 km.

Saturn orbits at an average distance of 1,420 Million Kilometers from the Sun.

Saturn has the largest ring system and lots of moons... I've also lost count here..can someone tell me what current number of moons is for Saturn? A few are suspected to exist and just haven't been found yet. The evidence for their existance is in the rings

Saturn is a Gas Giant planet.

Saturn is the least dense of all the planets. I've heard it said, If we could find an ocean large enough, Saturn would float. Now that would be a sight, LOL. I'm sure gravity would make a mess out of that picture.

There are a lot more facts about Saturn...please add a few. :yesplease:

Hi Robert Yes, Saturn would float.. its density is less than water.

Catch the rings this year for the last time in a long time. They're closing up (from our perspective) and by 2009 they'll be edge on and very difficult to make out

NO! I'm going to have to learn imaging quick smart.

I think the Cassini division was caused by a rogue moon floating through the ring system and either consuming or nudging the ring debris out the way. Any other theories?

Hmm, its feasible I guess.

I have to dash out to work, to be continued. :pipethinker:

lol, if I didn't need expensive astro gear, I wouldn't work so hard.

What could have created the Cassini division?

I've never really given the cassini division much thought. I guess something must have ploughed through the rings at some stage.

I just tried to google this and couldn't find anything.
