Hi Radar & Anyone Interested,

Here is a link to a neat explanation about the pros & cons of each detector type.

NOTE*
I have read recently that CMOS detectors will eventually superceed traditional CCD detectors in astro cameras - and they will become much cheaper. If anyone has more details on this topic, I am interested to hear the current views.

Most DSLRs use CMOS so it's only a matter of time before astro chips go the same way. Not that I'll ever be able to afford a good astro chip :(

Hi Impakt,

I 'think' it is ony Canon who use CMOS, a point worth checking to see which makes use what type of detector?. My Nikon's use CCD's.

Someone might take up the research job and report back.

Hi Astro,
You are right, most DSLRs still use CCD, however, my info indicates that CMOS and variants (such as the NMOS used in the new olympus DSLRs) will -most likely- start appearing in increasing numbers in DSLRs and compacts.

Given what I know about both technologies (I sell cameras for a living) I am a little surprised about CMOS making a comeback (my first digital camera was CMOS and it sucked). I think the reason is that noise has been addressed in CMOS and they are cheaper to make. I dont know how old that PDF you posted is, but it was a little off in places. Mind you, after 6 months the doc would be obsolete anyway. I hate technology. Just when you think you're on top of it...
