Gday maybe of interest to anyone thinking of buying a ToUcam {new model} for planetary imaging, think its the cheapest price Ive seen at 105AU

http://www.jpldisplays.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=3284

A adapter can be found here http://webcaddy.com.au/astro/adapter.asp

Hey Beren, I thought webcams like this needed to be modified in some way. Or is this one ready to go?

Cheers

Ray you just need to get the adapter to replace the lens on the stock ToUcam to fit into a 1.25 eyepiece holder and then your ready for action. For an extra expense you can get a modded toUcam that permits you to push the exposure times beyond what a stock one can go {a cheaper guider option}. Telescopes and astronomy in South Australia sell the older model 840k pro11 both stock and modded, noted as well they have dropped the price of their stock 840k from 195 down to 145 {not sure if that includes the adpater or not}.The newer 900nc model might provide a slight advantage over the older model, from what Ive read anyway :hmm:

Ta for the info mate. What is your opinion? Do these cameras need to be modded for planetary imaging?

Cheers

No you don't them modded for planetary work, the long exposure mod offers a cheaper guider alternative or even some DSO work if your willing to give it ago :thumbsupmate:

Radar as Stuart said the camera does not need modding for planetary imaging. If you are interested in getting one modded EXFSO does them for about $100 over at SCP.

That makes it about 200 all up, which is cheaper than what Telescopes and astronomy sell modded 900's for.

Hi Beren,

Don't forget that when you remove the ToUcam lens, you also remove the infra red blocking filter (it is stuck on the rear lens element, so, you will need a UV/IR Cut filter screwed into the front of your 1.25" adaptor, I use the Baader UV/IR Cut filter. Without this your colours will be innacurate and images will not be as sharp because IR focuses at a slightly different spot when using any refactor scope.

Clear skies...

Another interesting point, the 740K, 840K and 900 ToUcams are identical except for the firmware version. I understand that you can re-flash the firmware with the latest version to do just that. Know what you are doing though!!!

Ray, the ToUcam as it comes plus adaptor is all you need for solar system, if you want to do extended (long) exposures for DSO's, then you need the long exposure mod done to it.

Thanks Sheviil, I do have the same IR filter {that I used on my old 840k modded ToUcam...sold this } and on the Moggs website they have a lens removal procedure http://webcaddy.com.au/astro/adapter.htm , so hopefully that will go smooth. Have seen refrences to ToUcam firmware to enable raw mode or something, beyond me I will just use it in its orginal state.

I'm thinking about getting one of these web cams purely because they are so cheap and i'm getting the planetary bug.

Think they are based in Victoria Ray, not sure if they are solely a online store or have shop somewhere there. They used a independent freight company costing 9.7.

Forget to add to Ray you'll need a IR filter, I got a Baader UV-IR-Cut Filter from the guys at AOE http://www.aoe.com.au/filters.html , always great service from them.
