Selcting Brighter Stars with Noel's Actions

I was putting this message in an email to Noel, then thought that it would probably be better here for everyone else to read.

Quick question for Noel -

I have scanned one of my slides into a 100 meg file (4000 dpi).

When I goto select bright stars using your action sets, it only seems to select the smaller stars now. I've used this action before with no problem. I'm thinking because of the size of this image I need to adjust a setting somewhere.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking the stars are not close enough to perfectly white in your scanned data. The action uses the absolute brightness of the stars when they get very large.

Set your image levels so the brightest parts of the stars are at level 255 or VERY close and it should work. You can use Levels, or a trick I like which is to do a very low percentage unsharp mask with a large radius (e.g., 80).

Please post (or send me) a small crop from the image and I can confirm this.
