This is a general information thread on the Planet Venus.

Please feel free to add some facts or questions about this Planet.

Venus is just a tiny bit smaller than Earth. (Diameter 12,102 km while Earth diameter is 12,756)

Venus lies at an average distance of 108 Million Kilometers from the Sun.

Venus has no moons.

Venus is a rocky planet with lots of Volcanic activity.

Venus is the Hottest planet due in part to it's very dense and poisonous gases.

There are a lot more facts about Venus...please add a few. :yesplease:

Venus rotates east to west on it's axis once in 243 earth days.

If you were standing on the surface of Venus you'd be crushed by your own weight. Whatever you weigh now you'd weigh 90 times as much!

Hang on, the Earth and Venus are the same size, with the same amount of gravity /... HOW would I possibly weigh 90 times as much??

Any takers?

By the way, at its brightest, this planet is the number one object reported to police, radio stations and the air force as a UFO.

I thought that the atmospheric pressure was 90 times greater on Venus than
that of Earth. The pressure from a heavy atmosphere could crush a man standing on the surface.

So would you be crushed by your own weight or by the weight of the Venus atmosphere?

This seems the same as going to the depths of Earths oceans in a submarine. Go too deep and the sea pressure will crush the submarine and those inside. But the people inside are not crushed by their own weight but by the weight of the ocean above.

One hunnerd percent correct... (that's how I saw the word spelt on another forum.. I like it).

Venus's surface temperature is 482C!

I think you would melt (vapourise) before you got crushed, considering lead melts at 327C. :pipethinker:

482C Makes me wonder if there are lakes of liquid metal somewhere on the surface of Venus.

Now that's a thought Robert. There probably would have to be liquid metal lakes scattered around the place.

Now here is a thought. How hard would it be to terra-form Venus?

You would have to thin the atmosphere out somehow. This would releive the crushing atmospheric pressure, but at the same time, it would cool the planet because heat could now escape.

How can an atmosphere be thinned out?:hmm:

I thought Terra forming Venus was a great idea. I just have to figure out how to do it.

I need some kind of atmospheric engineer (does this profession even exist?).

I would love to see the plans for engineering venus into a habitable planet. There would be some serious chemistry required for the atmosphere there. Though somehow I can't see any plausible terra forming for it anytime soon. :pipethinker:

I can't see venus ever being terraformed. But if it were to ever be seriously considered, then moving the planet away from the sun would have to be the first step. How this would be acheived is anyone's guess. :pipethinker:

Cool article. I would have never have thought that this subject (terraforming venus) would have been taken so seriously.

Well never heard of that profession but given that Venus's climate is believed to be caused by a runaway CO2 type situation that may be a starting point. Some method of "fixing" the CO2 either by use of organisms that can photosynthesie the CO2 (unlikely because of temp). Or a mechanical method to start the process. Of cause part of the solution may include exotic answers such as space sails to reduce the energy from the sun adding to the energy input while also reducing/altering the atmospeheric composition.

Now I look at the link to wikipedia!!!!

Mind you those ideas could help on Mars to help terraform it. Just goes to show a little bit is good but a lot is....

lol, sounds like something I would do.

I enjoy these theoretical discussions. They make for interesting conversations. Though my neighbour always looks at me funny when I start talking about terraforming Venus over the back fence :duh:

Yes, I'm starting to think this Jim.

Even the girl that was working in the McDonalds drive thru tonight acted all strange when I started to talk about terraforming venus.

If you really want to freak out a McDonald's person tell them your star sign but don't say you're Capricorn or Sagittarian, or anything mundane like that - say you're a 'Cesarian' and see what they do. (say it to yourself and see how it sounds)

P.S. The average bod will look at you blankly and say something intuitively complex like, "Ar, Right!".

I could feel it coming. Terraforming Venus? It had to end with humour :thumbsupmate:
