Hi,

I sent off my Canon 350D for a full Enhanced Filter Replacement & Ex Cooler modification. Now it is back and here are some images of the modified camera.

I have just uploaded these images with descriptions to my Picasa album:

for anyone who is interested. Info & Prices http://www.centralds.net/en/index.htm

So far I have only taken some normal daylight shots - to make sure the camera still works as a normal camera.

Two posts here to get the 10 images for viewing.

This is a shot taken with the kit 70 to 300 zoom lens, hand held & shaky at 300mm. It was siting on the power line between the house & astro workshop - watching for lizards. I was about 10 feet away.

White balance preset with 18% Grey Card works just fine. Exposure compensation needs a tweak down as this filter lets in more light.

This is the firm that does the modifications. Info & Prices.

My goodness Shevill, you are one serious technical wizard! Dare I ask what this sort of mod costs? And can it be done to a D70?

Hi Wakeleo,

Sorry, I forgot to post the link to where this work was /can be done. I supplied my own camera.

Info & Prices here: http://www.centralds.net/en/index.htm

I do not think they do any Nikon cameras. The 350D seems to be the popular model and its successor, the 400D

That sure is a lot of mods for one camera Shev. Looking forward to seeing the coming space images from it. Be interesting to see images that were taken before and then after the mods were implemented.

Hi Shevill,

Very extensive mods there. Do you need to apply any heat shink paste between the heat transfer plates?

Also have you considered water cooling instead of the fan? Water cooling is a fairly common mod to overclocked computers, so I just wondered wether it would be practical for a modded camera.

Cheers Colin

Hi Colin,

Yes, in the Cooler mode, one applies thermal conductive compound (supplied). I did a lot of experiments with Peltier cooling video cameras some years back and water (coolant) cooling the heat exchanger, worked very well. Pics on my Picasa site. I used a silver compound.

The degree of cooling is adjustable, as is the fan speed. The copper radiator is a multitude of copper shim heat fins. In Tasmania the average night time temps are around 3 to 8 degrees, so the whole unit is very efficient.

Using a water cooled heat exchanger just adds another technology and perhaps not worth it, unlike a PC processor which does get really hot.

Thank you for your interest and useful comments.

Hi Shevill

Thanks for that, Just one more question - how much extra weight is added to the camera? I know that Copper is one of the best heat conductors which is why it has been used, but it is normally very heavy which is why it is not used so much in PCs. Rather they use aluminium heat sinks with the better quality one having a copper "slug" that presses on to the CPU, GPU or chipset that is trying to be cooled.

Sorry I keep comparing this modification to a PC which I know is incorrect, but it is the only thing that I can comare it to.

Cheers Colin
