This is a shot from the 12-hour electrical storm we had in Hobart last week-end, taken by a friend of mine who lives down this way. Taken on the eastern shore looking back towards Hobart across the Derwent. Hobart had 9mm rain during the storm, we had 37mm this side of the river.

Awesome work. Do you get many thunderstorms down that way Shev? Electrical storms are awesome. We don't get enough here.

Hi Radar,

No, not a common thing here at all, however, weather patterns & events are just more extreme, like the storm we had a few weeks back, we got 3" of rain in one day, Hobart was awash.

Several years ago we had an electrical storm on Boxing day, I have the video of strikes on the hillside in front of us across the minor road, one on the hill top, one in the paddock 100 metres away, next on our patio then one on our top boundary. Got some on video. Scary stuff because there was total power failure, we are in a dark spot, no street or house lights anywhere just pitch black we we have a power outage.

I have now fixed up a 180 degree video camera Sky-Cam on my roof so that I can record the next one, fingers crossed it comes soon. The cable run down to various recorders in my computer room. I have designed & built computer controlled automated all sky camera systems for university climatology research, and now operate in various countries. The Mt Canopus observatory use one as a night time all sky camera so that they can see when clouds are coming and it allows them not to waste exposure time.

This all sky camera has been in operation since 2000 non stop...has my old email address still!
