Sure is! When I turn on the camera, the EOS utility pops straight up. It's just the top three selections are greyed out. The only one that isnt is the monitor folder selection.

Furthermore, as soon as I plug the USB cable in, the display on the back of the camera shuts down.

I just got the scope and ToUcam worked out perfect, tracking beautifully on NGC3372 and now this? When will things just work?

AND its a PERFECT sky!!!!! First time in ages!

well, it is still a PERFECT night which makes it even worse. I tried reinstalling EOS utility using the original software that came with the camera 6 months or so ago.

Still got the same problem. Top 3 selections are greyed out and the LCD display on the back of the camera goes out when I plug in the USB.

Ive had a gutfull of this crap for one night. Going to bed to sulk.:frown:

yeah mine goes dark too but it still works.
What opperating system are you using by the way,,not vista i hope!

mine is xp and works ok.
Have a look at the Yahoo user group,,might have some insights for you mate.

They say to not have it on bulb setting when trying to remote camera control,,, unless you have a long exposure control cable.
Sorry to not be of help so far.

Chin up !!

How frustrating Baz. I don't have experience with this camera but from my own experience with other cameras / software setups, sometimes the camera mode causes this types of software change. If I had to guess, it sounds like the computer knows (or thinks) that the camera is in some kind of mode where capturing images cannot be done. Play back mode or something. I would connect the camera, and keep pressing, flicking, turning knobs until something on the software changes. Leave a few seconds inbetween each setting change until something comes up.

USB blanking out the screen on the camera sounds like a typical but normal usb function. You may even be able to modify that though in your options menu.

Keep us posted.

Here's what USED to happen.

I would plug the camera into the PC via a USB cable, with the mode on bulb and a long exposure shutter release cable plugged in.

I would turn on the camera and the EOS utility windo would come up, with a selection that said camera settings?remote shooting.

From there I could select that and take a pic. The LCD screen on the back of the camera would be on and displaying all relevant information at this time. Whilst the photo was shooting, the camera LCD screen would darken, but there would still be a counter on it.

once the shutter was released, ZoombrowserEX would fire up, set in scroll mode to preview the shots.

Ive been on the blower with Canon for two days now.....still no joy. Camera is being picked up by the computer, but the LCD screen on the back of the camera goes out when you plug in the USB, and the top 3 icon selections in EOS Utility are still greyed out.

Tried all their updates, reboots, restarts, uninstalls and reinstalls.......another clear night (magnificent) and still no camera.....

I changed absolutely NO settings on the camera between when it worked and when it didn't. THe only difference was I installed it on a new PC with the same OS.

Hi Baz,

Just fired up my old laptop, loaded the Canon software and connected my modded 350D with USB cable & long exposure cable. I still have a laptop with a real serial & parallel connections - wow! NEC Versa Premium running XP Pro SP2

Have you put your camera communication into PC Connection mode via its menu Tools2 settings??

The PC software will see the camera but not communicate unless set to PC Communication.

Clear skies...

Thanks Shevill, I very much appreciate you doing that in an effort to solve a problem that is not your own.

I did as you instructed, but on my 400D, I could not find PC connect in any of the menus.

However, in all my button pressing in the software on the pc, I must have fluked something, because now it works!!!!!

YAAAAAYYYY!!!

Overcast tonight and for the rest of the week.......:nooooooooo:

Hi Baz,

Just out of interest, have a look in your Canon 400 book & see what it says about PC Connection - I would be interested to know.
